A wonderful late 19th century large painted Chinese bench in hardwood, retaining the original paint, with a lovely blue faded patina and retaining the original Chinese symbols on the seat. In Qing dynasty homes most people sat on stools or chairs, while benches were often found in public theatres or temples. In ancient China, benches were low to the ground but European influence made higher designs fashionable. Circa 1850
