This absolutely stunning and totally unique artisan Japanese-inspired pedestal table is from a large horizontal slice of beech approx 100/120 years old sourced from an ancient old tree that collapsed and recovered in rural Wales, supported by two mature ash pedestals approx 60/70 years old, then mostly finished with Sugi Ban burnt wood method, the top having a blend of burning and polishing, fully hand finished in natural wax.
This truly magnificent artisan coffee table has the most luxurious and sumptuous finish, this organic piece is influenced by a passion for the natural imperfections of fallen trees, sourced by the maker studio Anj in rural Wales.
Individual, age-old wood forms are considered for the beauty of their grain, flaws, and imperfections - debarked, then cut and shaped by hand, to showcase fresh, new abstract forms.
Equally, at home in both traditional and more contemporary settings, the coffee table is a timeless design that will add individuality and impact, within both home and commercial interior spaces.
This Japanese-inspired table is finished with a technique called Shou Sugi Ban. It is a Japanese technique of preserving wood. The surface is charred with fire and then sanded back to a smooth surface. It is commonly used for the exterior cladding of buildings where the charred timber protects against insects and is a water repellant. In this case, the technique has been used to artistically enhance the appearance of this Japanese low table surface, accentuating the strong vivid grain of the beech tree.
